The present Barangay Bucalag was established a few years before the Southwest Pacific War by the people who came from the old purok of the same name. The danger of erosion and inundation of the Abra river caused to people to transfer their purok to its present site by the sea, northwest of Barangay Pasungol. According to the old folks of the purok, there once lived an old chief of the place called “Bucalag.” This old chief was so popular that the people of the other settlements called his village “Purok ni Apo Bucalag.” The name was shortened later to Bucala, the present name of the barangay.
