Purok Labut of the olden days was divided into two under Presidential Decree No.
86 of 1973. Labut is the first Purok on the highway, northeast of the Poblacion
(third) of Santa. It is bounded on the north by Mabilbila, on the east by the
Ilocos Range, on the west by Caniugan (now abandoned), and on the south by the
Poblacion of Santa.
Legend had it that the purok got its name in the following manner. One night,
some travelers engaged a man from the purok as their guide. The way was beset
with danger, for in some places on he marshy way, there were patches of
quicksand. Whenever they came near a patch of quicksand, the guide would warn
them to be careful and said aloud, “La ta abut, la ta abut.” When the travelers
reached the center of the communithy of Santa without any untoward incident,
they thanked their guide and said to him, “We will never forget our travel in
“La Ta Abut, in “Labut.”
