Barangay Nagpanaoan was formerly the old Poblacion of Santa, founded in 1854. Because of the destruction brought about by Layos Bongsot, the people moved out of the place to establish another one, the third and the present in the southern part of the town. However, some regained in the old place to cultivate their farms. The people who had left called their former Poblacion, “Nagpanaoan,” formed by a combination of the Iloco prefix,“Nag” to the stem word “Panaw” and the suffix “an” which means “the place that had been left or abandoned.”
