ECONOMY
The
municipality of Sinait has an agricultural-based
economy. Agriculture is the major occupation of the
people of Sinait and the main crops are palay, tabacco,
garlic and tomato. The other leading crops are
mongobeans, watermelon, corn, peanut, and poultry in
their backyard. People living along the shoreline
engage in fishing. Hogs and chicken are raised on a
semi-commercial; goats are raised on a commercial
basis. Sinait is known for certain seaweed called
“pukpuklo” and “kulet” which are sold to the local
market adjacent towns of Ilocos Sur. Ilocos Norte,
also in Baguio, Manila and Cagayan. Commercial
activities in Sinait are carried out in the market,
sari-sari stores and small private enter price.
Cottage industries like bamboo furniture making,
bamboo crafts, rattan crafts, and hat weaving and
metal crafts, tricycle sidecars, owner type jeep
bodybuilding can be found scattered in the town proper
and some rural barangays.
The
public market is located at Brgy. Macabiag caters the
needs of the whole municipality, and some neighboring
towns. Sinait has a well established identity and is
known in the business community as the “Garlic Center
of the North”, a convergence of commercial activity
strategically located between Vigan And Laoag City,
the Capital towns of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte
respectively.
SOCIAL SERVICES
Educational services are made available by forty two
Nursery School through the Day Care Social Welfare
Programs and two Nursery – Kindergarten Schools which
are sponsored by the religious institution and the
Municipal Government, thirteen Elementary Schools and
one National High School, all public schools. There
are no colleges or Universities in the municipality.
Students who wish to pursue their tertiary education
and post graduate studies go to the higher
institutions in Manila, Baguio City, City of San
Fernando, Laog City and Batac Ilocos Norte, and Vigan
City Ilocos Sur.
To
meet health needs of the people, there is a government
hospital, the Sinait District Hospital and one private
clinic, the Corpuz Family Clinic and Hospital. These
are complimented by the services of the Municipal
Health Office. Medicine supplies are available from
five drugstore and pharmacies of the District Hospital
and the Corpuz Clinic & Hospital.
For
sports activities, there are multi-purpose courts at
the Roman Catholic Church compound, Sinait National
High School grounds and at back of the Municipal Hall
main building. At the sports Complex, socio-cultural
activities are being conducted. Multi-purpose
pavements and complexes are also enjoyed by many of
the rural barangays for sports and cultural
development activities. Likewise, the municipal
library is equipped with reading materials including
dailies and magazines, national and international
which could be used by students as well as the out of
school youths, government and private employees in
their research studies.
CULTURE
During Christmas holidays, every barangays in this
municipality have their own activities to celebrate
Christmas, sponsored by the Sangguniang Kabataan,
other youth and ladies association and other civic
spirited people. On May 1-3 of every year, the people
of Sinait celebrate its town fiesta in honor of Apo
Santo Cristo Milagroso. Thousand of people flock to
Sinait to venerate Apo Santo Milagroso on those days.
As part of the celebration, the municipal
administration sponsors beauty contest for the
selection of Miss. Sinait. Song and dances are
rendered and performed by members of various
organization and barangays nightly from May 1-3. Now
on its third year, the municipality being the garlic
center of the province will celebrate Bawang (Garlic)
Festival. Contests are participated in by farmers in
celebration of the Bawang Festival. Street dancing
depicting salient historical customs and traditions of
old Ilocano folks of Sinaits is an added attraction of
the festivities.
MODE OF TRANSPORTATION
Several bus companies such as the Philippine Rabbit,
Farinas Trans, Maria de Leon Trans, Partas Trans,
Franco Trans, and RCJ Trans ply the Laoag-Baguio and
Laoag-Manila routes and pass through Sinait. Some of
these buses are air-conditioned. Travel time for
Sinait to Baguio is usually five hours and Sinait –
Manila travel time is usually eight hours. Likewise,
mini buses ply Laoag – Vigan route and pass through
the municipality. For barangays commuters, the means
of transportation is tricycle, calese, jeepneys
private cars as well as the hand tractor with carrier
or the so –called “kuliglig”.
FACILITIES AND ACCOMODATIONS
For
accommodation there are two lodging houses namely the
Teppeng Cove and Restaurant which is located at
Barangay Teppeng and Imelda’s Cove in Barangay
Cabangtalan which is ideal for swimming. Its white
sand and its facilities such as rest house, sheds and
tables are ideal for picnic. For nightlife, there is
Mountainside which is located at Brgy. Magsaysay and
Subway in Brgy. Baliw. Visitors and Guest are likewise
accommodated by resident when occasions call.
