GEOGRAPHY
LOCATION
The province of Ilocos Sur is located along the
western coast of Northern Luzon. It is bounded by
Ilocos Norte in the north, Abra in the northeast, Mt.
Province in the east, Benguet in the southeast, La
Union in the south and Luzon Sea and Lingayen Gulf in
the west. The province falls within latitudes 16°
40’ to 17°
54’ north and longitudes 120°
20’ to 120°
56’ east. Vigan, the provincial capital is
approximately 408 kilometers by road from Manila, 128
kilometers north of San Fernando City, and 80
kilometers south of Laoag City.
LAND
AREA
Ilocos Sur has an area of 2579.6 square kilometers
occupying about 20.1 percent of the total land area of
the Ilocos Region. Among the municipalities, Quirino
and Cervantes have the largest area covering about
18.3 percent of the total provincial area, while Sta.
Catalina and San Vicente occupy the smallest area of
only 28.6 sq. km. or 1.1 percent of the total
provincial area.
POLITICAL SUBDIVISION
The province is composed of 32 municipalities, 2
component cities and 768 barangays. Of the
municipalities, 20 are identified as lowland areas and
the remaining 12 are considered upland areas.

LANGUAGES & DIALECTS
The
principal dialect of the province is Ilocano
representing about 95% of the total population of
594,206 in 2000. Other dialects/languages spoken in
the province include Tagalog, Pangasinense, Visaya,
Chinese, English, Kankanai, Tingguian and Muslim.
RELIGION
Christianity
is widely spread in the province. Approximately 85
percent of the total population professes Roman
Catholicism, the prevailing religion in the province.
The remaining percentage of the population professes
to Protestantism, Buddhism, Iglesia ni Cristo,
Aglipayan, Islam, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Seventh Day
Adventists.
ETHNIC GROUPS
here are
ethnic groups in the province namely: Itneg and
Kankanai. These ethnic groups are residing in the
upland municipalities.
CITIZENSHIP
Almost
all the people of Ilocos Sur are Filipinos although
there are non-Filipinos such as Chinese, Americans,
Thais, and Europeans. These non-Filipinos however do
not reside permanently in the province. They stay here
as students or are engaged in some business ventures.
