Goat is one of the hardiest of all livestock
breeds. It has high resistance to disease, adapts
well to various climates and regions and has
outstanding size and growth rate. It reaches puberty
early and with proper care is able to kid every eight
months. It has high percentage of multiple birth and maintain economic production for
ten years or longer.

GOAT MANAGEMENT
Breeding Tips
▪ Goats
reach age of puberty in 6 months.
▪ Best
age of breeding is 8-10 months.
▪ Heat
cycle every 21 days.
▪ Heat
period lasts for 3 days.
▪ Best
time to breed is 2nd day or towards end of heat
period.
▪ Mating
should be made January so that kidding will be
on June when there are plenty of grass.

of pregnancy: 150 days.

GUIDELINES TO AVAIL THE BILEG BOER (BIBO) BUCK FOR THE
UPGRADING OF NATIVE GOATS IN THE BARANGAYS
-
Applicant
must organize an Association of goat
raisers with at least 40 heads of breedable does.

File
application supported by a Resolution with the
Office of the Provincial Veterinarian
for assessment/evaluation.
-
Secure
approval from the Governor.
-
Must
have sufficient area for the establishment of a
goat breeding center to serve as “Anchor Farm” in
the barangay.
-
Assign
a caretaker for the BIBO goat.
-
Provide
forage, clean water and goat shed at the Anchor Farm.
-
Record
breeding history of the BIBO buck.
-
When
the BIBO Buck gets sick, report to the Office of the
Municipal Agriculturist c/o Municipal
Livestock Coordinator for immediate assistance of the Buck.
-
in
case of death of the Buck, submit certification of
death duly noted by the Provincial Veterinarian
or Veterinarian-Consultant.
Year-round Guidelines
January to May
Ideal breeding time. Buck should be
injected with Vit. A, D, E every month. Pregnancy
period 150 days. (Jan-May). If grasses are scarce,
concentration should be given to pregnant does at 1%
of body weight.
June
1st
Deworming before rainy season. Kidding time. Prepare
beddings for kid and assistance should be given during
kidding. Be sure kids suck colostrums immediately
after birth.
July to September
Rearing of kids. Planting of forages.
Since goats are prone to pneumonia, they should be
kept in their pens during rainy season and feeds are
given on a cut and carry basis. Weaning time is end of
September.
October to December
2nd De-worming after rainy season.
Growing stage start from October to December. And
those unfit for breeding are fattened. Preparation of
does to improve weight ready for next breeding season.
